Wood Drill Bits Straightening Machine in China

Wood drill bits leave the flute cutting, grinding and heat treatment stages with residual bend, and a bent bit wanders, overheats and drills oversize holes. We build automatic straightening machines for drill bits and similar slender tooling in China, and every machine is proven on the customer workpiece before it ships. This page shows a wood drill bits application straightened on our machine, with the workpiece specification, machine photos and the working video from the test.

The Application

Wood drill bits size: 11/8 and 152 mm length. 0.2 mm straightness is required.

Why Wood Drill Bits Bend

Wood drill bits combine a slender fluted body with a heavy shank and, on many designs, a threaded screw point. That geometry is bend-prone at every stage of production: heating before forging, quenching after heat treatment, grinding along the flute, and finally tumbling and bulk packing. Because the screw point initiates the hole, even a small bend at the tip multiplies into visible hole wander by the time the bit is halfway in.

A 0.2 mm straightness requirement is a typical precision-tooling number: tight enough that hand straightening cannot hold it over a batch, loose enough that a well-configured press machine reaches it on the first pass for most parts. The economics follow from that ratio. When most parts pass after one measured press, the machine pays for itself in labor and scrap alone; when hand straightening chases the tolerance part by part, the cost is hidden in rework and inconsistent batches.

How the Machine Works on Drill Bits

The drill bits are measured first. Sensors scan the runout along the flute and shank while the part rotates, and the control system builds the bend map: where the bit is bent, by how much, and in which direction. The servo press then corrects each point in sequence, and the system remeasures after every press. A bit leaves the machine only when the residual runout at every measured point is inside the set tolerance, so the result is documented per part instead of judged by eye.

Surface condition is respected throughout the cycle, which matters on a cutting tool: the supports and pressing anvil are configured so the flute edges and the screw point are not marked during correction, because a bit that measures straight but carries a rolled flute edge has traded one defect for another. The same configuration discipline is why the machine can run mixed batches of similar bits without changeover hardware, only a different recipe on the control panel.

Choosing a Machine for Wood Drill Bits

Two dimensions decide the machine configuration for drill bits: the workpiece envelope, meaning the range of diameters and lengths the machine must accept across your product mix, and the straightness requirement, which drives the measurement resolution and the number of correction points. For background on how drill bits and similar drilling tools behave in straightening, see straightening of drilling tools; the broader tooling family including screwdriver bits is covered under tool and bit straightening solutions. The case for moving from manual benches to automatic machines is laid out in manual vs. automatic straightening, and the step-by-step process for this exact workpiece family is in our guide on how to straighten wood drill bits on this site.
