Why Tool Bits Are Straightened

A drill bit or screwdriver bit is a precision instrument in mass production clothing. Its straightness defines its performance: a bent drill bit cuts oversize, wanders and breaks; a bent screwdriver bit wobbles in the fastener recess, cam-outs and damages the screw head. Both defects trace back to the same source — residual bends from manufacturing and heat treatment that survive into the finished tool.

Straightening corrects the bend before it becomes a field failure. On this machine family the process is measured, not guessed: straightness is detected at predefined positions, corrected by applying the corresponding force to eliminate internal stress, and the part is brought to the required straightness. A grating ruler measures the bit’s straightness, the spring collet clamps it, and the operator can create and store straightening data per bit type — so every batch runs on proven parameters.
