How to correct a distorted pipe? Twist is the deformation that plain up-and-down straightening cannot fix: the cross-section of the tube is rotated along its length, so the part can measure straight in bending and still be unusable. Where Tube Twist Comes From
Every factor—from tube forming, transportation and storage, cutting methods, heat treatment, and surface treatment to secondary machining and even welding—can induce tube twist. In engineering practice, pipe twist gives rise to a wide range of issues: incorrect hole positions preventing proper bolt installation; hole-center misalignment during tube butt joints; face seal failure; motion interference; abnormal operating noise; cosmetic defects; and loss of machining datum references in downstream operations, among many other potential problems. Consequently, tube twist straightening is critically important in certain applications—particularly for the square tubes used in data center liquid cooling CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) frames, which have an even greater need for straightening.
Why CDU Frames Cannot Tolerate Twist
A coolant distribution unit is a bolted assembly: manifolds, pumps, filters and control hardware mount to a square-tube frame through machined holes and faces. When a frame tube carries twist, those holes arrive rotated out of position, bolt slots stop lining up, face seals meet at an angle instead of flat, and the assembly force goes into the frame instead of the fasteners. In a data center build schedule, the result is rework at the worst possible time, on parts that were dimensionally correct in every other respect.
The same sensitivity is why twist is measured, not inspected. A twisted tube can look perfectly straight to the eye, because bending and twisting are independent deformations. The measurement has to reference the cross-section rotation along the length, which is a different instrument arrangement than a runout scan for bend.

Specifying a twist correction application follows the same discipline as any straightening job: define the functional requirement first, which for CDU frames usually means the hole positions and sealing faces the assembly actually depends on, then agree how twist will be measured at acceptance and on which fixture. When the machine measurement and the customer measurement use the same reference, twist correction stops being an argument and becomes a number the machine closes on every part.
